vendor-img12El Mirador Farm

Company History: Victor Pavia was born and raised in Mexico in a small town called Cuautla Morelos in southern Mexico. Like my parents at the age of 16, I went to work for a farmer who grew tomatos and tomatillos. I learned everything about farming from conditioning the land, planting and growing the produce. In 1980, I came to the US and worked two jobs, one job in a clothing factory during the day and pizzeria by night in order. I worked both jobs in order to provide for my family in Mexico. In 1981, I opened my own restaurant in Staten Island that became famous for its squash blossom quesadillas. In 1990, I became a permanent resident, I brought my fiancé to the US, were we got married and had five children.

I thought that my dreams of owning my own farm would stay a dream until a friend gave me the phone number to the New Farmer Development Project (NFDP), a nonprofit that helps new immigrant farmers get started. I took the training course in 2004 and the next spring I rented 3 acres of farming land in Goshen NY for planting a variety of vegetables. The following year was difficult, but I loved working the land. On the third year with the help of the NFDP I found a 26 acre farm in Hazlet, NJ where I have been farming for the past four years and continue to improve my farming techniques in 2007. I feel good knowing that I am selling high quality produce.
